Why grass height matters
Long, dry grass carries fire quickly. Keeping it short around buildings is one of the simplest ways to reduce fuel close to your home. The NSW Rural Fire Service publishes guidance on preparing your property; check their current advice for your area.
Start close to the house
Focus first on the area immediately around the home, sheds, garages and gas bottles. Keep grass short and clear away dead material and debris.
Clear access
Driveways, gates and tracks should be clear so emergency vehicles and your family can get in and out. Cut back grass along the edges of access routes.
Fence lines and boundaries
Grass and weeds build up along fences. A regular cut along boundaries keeps fuel down and makes the whole block easier to manage.
Book before the rush
Demand for mowing jumps in late spring. Booking a regular schedule early means the work is done on time rather than after the grass has dried off.
